Assignment #20: Reflecting on Environmental Art

In the theme of our upcoming “Sacred Sky, Sacred Earth” event, take some time to study some well-known environmental artists and reflect on your own thoughts about this kind of art.
Research one of the following environmental artists:
Andy Goldsworthy (“Rivers and Tides”)
Nancy Holt (Sun Tunnels) and Robert Smithson (Earthworks and Photoworks)
Richard Long (Textworks, Sculptures)

Choose one on which to focus your answers to the following questions:

1. Describe your definition on “environmental art.”
2. Describe the style of the chosen artist in five words. Make sure to include the name of the artist chosen.
3. In general, what might an environmental artist be exploring.
4. In general, how do you think an audience should approach an environmental art experience when they see/hear/interact with it?

This blog assignment is worth 10 points and is due no later than Friday, March 4.

  1. 1. anything with scenery, or the environment, where the focus isn't on a person, it has to be outside.

  2. 1. A lot of environmental art isn't just to look pretty and artistic. To me the definition of "environmental art" is art made to make a statement on the negative impact people have on our earth.

    2. Nancy Holt: crazy, concrete, sunlight, color, harmony

    3. I think maybe nature, how things work without electricity, or how to make art without killing trees and animals; so making art without using brushes, paper, etc.

    4. The audience need to be more open minded- they should actually try to understand the product made by the artist, see what it really stands for, and how it helps our planet.

  6. 1. Environmental Art, is art that is designed from the nature around you. It is basically made by natural but you just help make it look more amazing with the nature around it.

    Richard Long (Textworks, Sculptures, I believe that "environmental art" is art based off nature and also created by nature. It could also be landscape paintings.


    2. Robert Smithson- captivating, speculative, creative,quadratic, and perceptive


    3. An environmental artist could be exploring the potential nature has to look beautiful and eventually into a piece of art.

    4. I think the audience should be emotionally ready to experience an environmental art piece by having a clear mind thats open to interpretatoin. They also should be able to tocuh the artwork and listen to the sounds(if it makes any sounds) in nature.

    1.) My definition of “environmental art” is using materials solely from the earth to create some sort of image or other form of art.
    2.) Andy Goldsworthy’s style: earthy, surreal, abstract, curvy, rough
    3.) An environmental artist might be exploring how to create an already beautiful, natural thing, and make its beauty more defined.
    4.) A person should notice the little details that the artist changed and just take in the natural beauty that is showcased. They shouldn’t be too critical if it’s rough because nothing is in a naturally perfect shape.

    2. Nancy Holt - astronomical, inventive, timely, simple, meaningful.
    3. An environmental artist needs to explore not only different forms of art, but different kinds of environments and weather and how to make them work in unison.
    4. The audience should have an open mind and be willing to interpret and interact with the art in different ways.

    3. An environmental artist is exploring natural sculptures and anything with naturally occurring shapes.

  13. 1. it's kinda cool but has no purpose, it seems more for people who actually enjoy doing that type of thing.
    2. Nancy Holt does lots of geometry shapes in the sand for fun, and she does cool giant spirals in the on the beach and has people stand near them for perspective.
    3. I don't know how to respond to this question, it does make any sense.
    4. I don't know how people should react to this, I'm not a physiologist, I'm a film maker, I don't even see how this applies to me.

  17. 1. To me, environmental art not only resonates with people on an emotional level, but makes a statement about our earth's (and universe's) condition. Just because a piece of artwork has elements of the earth incorporated in it doesn't make it environmental art. It has to say something about nature or about the way we're treating it.

    3. An environmental artist might be exploring his or her own emotions reflected in nature or they might be utilizing the earth in order to help the earth to speak.
    4. I think that people should revere environmental art. It is the communication of something much more vast than humans are capable of experience on a moment-to-moment basis. It should be approached with care, with respect, and with awe. Our earth is far greater than we give it credit for, than we are willing to appreciate.

    3. An environmental artist might be trying to express themselves through exploring nature and finding the beauty in the environment.

    4. An audience should be more open to environmental art because it is a more unique form of art and they should see it for its true beauty.

    1. Environmental art is any art that attempts to be environmental in meaning.
    2. Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels are large outdoor installations. They play with light and landscape.
    3. Environmental artists try to make work that reflects a natural landscape and a kind of feeling that you get from being in a natural place.
    4. They should do whatever they feel is good for them to do in relation to work. If the work has very many rules it might be difficult to deal with.

  27. 1. To me, "environmental art" is anything that incorporates themes and objects from nature and the environment.
    2. The artist I chose is Andy Goldsworthy. His style is: abstract, modern, geometric, new, and in a way, fantastical.
    3. I think an environmental artist would be seeking different objects and mediums in nature that could create something totally new.
    4. I think an audience shouldn't approach a work of environmental art with the mindset that what they'll see is this beauty commonly found among art aesthetics. They should keep an open mind, and be prepared to be fascinated and enthralled by what they see. Environmental art has a certain subtlety to it that they should be ready to deal with.
