Blog Assignment: May 2-May 20-Create a Website for Juries

On top of your final projects in New Media and in your strand, you will also create a website on which you will post the following items: jury pieces and resume.

Jury Pieces:

Using the site http://www.weebly.com, you will create your own personal website.  For your jury presentation at the end of the semester, you present your pieces via this website.

Resume:

On the server (Hall>Multimedia Lab>Blogs), you will find a resume template. You will create a one page resume to post on your weebly site. If you already have a resume, update and re-format it to fit CoSA Digital Media.

Final Portfolio Website Compilation-30 Points

1. You will choose a minimum of (minimum requirements: graphics-10 pieces; animation- 3 pieces; film- 2 film pieces and a choice of design new media or pre-production piece) of your best work from this year to post, create and post a resume to apply for a photography intern, add 2 career and college/training resources, have an about me home page, and design/post all of the above elements into a final portfolio website
2. You might break your projects into pages, special effects, color, black and white, fun stuff, etc.
3. Do not post personal information on your resume, you may use the school address and phone #
4. First you will need to create a free Weebly account at weebly.com
5. Next you can begin to design your website utilizing the given templates
6. Change the images, color, and layout using your own photos, resume, text boxes, etc.
7. Save Photoshop files as JPEGS so you can upload them to the site and/or create a slideshow. Video and Animation students will post their videos on You Tube and imbed them onto the site. 
8. Provide a title and brief description for the pieces you uploaded.
9. Publish your final site
10. List the link to your website on this blog comment so we can go to your website!

The final websites are due on Friday, May 20, 2011. 30 points.

Blog Assignment #23: Critique of your Choice

Animators: Period 8 Project

Filmmakers: 
You will watch a short film of your choice (15-20 minutes) and critique it by answering the following questions:

1.     1. Briefly outline the film’s plot, describing the events in Act One, Act Two and Act Three.

2.   2. What is the over-arching theme of the film?

3.   3. Describe the main characters. Which is the strongest, most influential to the story/theme.

4.   4. Describe your favorite scene.

5.   5. If you were directing the film, what would you do differently?

Graphic Designers: 

You will choose two graphic design pieces (print advertisement and website) and critique each by answering the following questions:

When you first glance at the page/screen/frame, what do you see first? Where does your eye go next? Plot the path your eye travels through the page/screen/frame. How does the designer direct your attention through the use of image and color?

Describe the dominant colors and the overall tone of the piece.

Describe the target audience. Why should they care about this product or service? How is it relevant to them.

Blog #22 How to Critique and Write about Art

Being Able to critique a piece of art is important in any creative field: film, animation, fine art, photography, design etc. To help you successfully critique art,  you can use the following steps: description, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. These are the steps in a formal critique.

1. DESCRIBE

This stage is like taking inventory. You want to come up with a list of everything you see in the work. Stick to the facts. Imagine that you are describing the artwork to someone over the telephone.

Note First Impression

Make a note of your first spontaneous reaction to the artwork. By the end of the process you may understand your first impression better or you may even change you mind. There are no wrong answers.

2. ANALYZE

A. Try to figure out what the artist has done to achieve certain effects. You should refer to your first impressions and try to explain how the artwork achieves that reaction.

B. Use the vocabulary you learned in class. For example, if you’re looking at a chain-link graphic, you learned reversals, transparency, complementary or analogous color, etc.

C. What do you notice about the artist's choice of materials?

D. What grabs your attention in the work? Refer to your first impression.

3. INTERPRET

Try to figure out what the artwork is about. Your own perspectives, associations and experiences meet with "the evidence" found in the work of art. All art works are about something. Some art works are about color, their subject matter, and social or cultural issues. Some art works are very accessible — that is, relatively easy for the viewer to understand what the artist was doing. Other works are highly intellectual, and might not be as easy for us to readily know what the artist was thinking about.

A. What is the theme or subject of the work? What mood or emotions does the artwork communicate?

B. What is the work about; what so you think it means?

C. Why do you think that artist created this work?

D. What do you think the artist's view of the world is?

4. EVALUATE

This is a culminating and reflecting activity. You need to come to some conclusions about the artwork based on all the information you have gathered and on your interpretations.

A. Have your thoughts or feelings about the artwork changed since your first impression? If so, how? What made you change your mind?

B. If not, can you now explain your first reaction to the work?

C. What have you seen or learned from this work that you might apply to your own art work or your own thinking?

Read this article about ways to market yourself in today’s economy. Answer the following questions:

Assignment #20: Reflecting on Environmental Art

In the theme of our upcoming “Sacred Sky, Sacred Earth” event, take some time to study some well-known environmental artists and reflect on your own thoughts about this kind of art.
Research one of the following environmental artists:
Andy Goldsworthy (“Rivers and Tides”)
Nancy Holt (Sun Tunnels) and Robert Smithson (Earthworks and Photoworks)
Richard Long (Textworks, Sculptures)

Choose one on which to focus your answers to the following questions:

1. Describe your definition on “environmental art.”
2. Describe the style of the chosen artist in five words. Make sure to include the name of the artist chosen.
3. In general, what might an environmental artist be exploring.
4. In general, how do you think an audience should approach an environmental art experience when they see/hear/interact with it?
